I have something to write after reading the first chapter of the book “Teaching Online : A Guide to Theory, Research, and Practice.” It talks about “whether we should teach online, particularly given the changes that we will face”, it indicates the impacts given to traditional education with advancing technologies. Online learning has become more and more popular, it brings the human into a completely different method of engaging with instruction. The technology has been tightly connected with human’s daily life, serving as background and being part of the world. It gave the example “As technology is incorporated with humanity, it becomes an extension of the human body, for example by looking through a pair of glasses.” Technological development has become an indispensable part of humanity. With the continuous progress and development of human society, technological innovation helps humans to have more choices and achieve improvements.Â
“Radio in the 1920s, television in the 1950s, and computers in the 1980s.” These communication technologies can ignore the limitations of space and time between the educator and students, saving a lot of spend and time. For example, Today when we are faced with something we don’t know, we generally choose to open search engines through mobile phones or computers, which reflects the features of information being synchronization, transparency and sharing that everyone could mainly find what they want to know on the internet.
The constant progress of technology also proves that there is still endless room for improvement. When we choose, online teaching would reduce the physical interaction between people despite the invention of video cameras, and lack of practical experiences “we might later overlook a more neutral or positive response (reduction) because it feels diminished or minimized in an online or text-based environment. The lack of face-to-face direct communication can affect the communication of ideas and lead to misunderstandings.
“Faculty deciding whether to teach online should consider what we hold dear about teaching and what we truly would deem too great a sacrifice to do without”, when we consider how to improve our education, to be clear about the core value of engaging with instruction, and Whether technology can be better integrated rather than completely replaced.
